Nick Hansen (founder of Nick Hansen Lighting Ltd) became interested in the technical side of theatre at the age of 11 when he became a member of his local theatre. Lighting quickly became his number one hobby and he spent as much time as he could watching and learning. He soon became a valued part of the lighting team at the local theatre and at his high school.

Whilst studying Technical Theatre at college to gain a more rounded knowledge of the industry one of his first paid jobs was a seasonal job at Stage Works Worldwide Productions in Blackpool. This, through contacts made, led to his first full time job as Assistant Lighting Technician at the Charter Theatre in Preston.  The years in the theatre gave him valuable knowledge, skills and experience in his craft including operating, converting touring productions to work in the venue, and lighting in house produced dance shows, bands, full scale musicals and of course Pantomime.

From the Charter Theatre he moved on to work as a technician on small tours and corporate events at a local hire company where he also learned more about repairs and servicing of the equipment widely used in the industry.

Nick then made his move into TV as a moving light/ dimmer technician working on various shows from Mastermind to CBBC’s “The Slammer”. His first lucky break came in2011 when, good friend from his days in the lighting booth at high school and now Lighting Director-  Andy Stagles asked him to be his Operator for a new CBeebies series – “Justin’s House” This was the start of his move into TV Operating and gave him the experience and ability to move on to operate shows such as ITV’s “X-Factor Audition and 6 Chair stages”, ITV’s “Britains Got Talent Audition Tour”, “The Sound of Music LIVE”, Lighting Programmer and Director for Hunan TV’s “I am a singer 2018”.

Over the last few years Nick has broadend his skills into Video Media Server programming, and has worked on several large scale events. He has not only been the programmer for these shows but heavily involved in the system design and working closely with creative directors to create there visions. As both a lighting and video programmer Nicks most recent shows have been: Pitbull’s World tour and “Time of our lives” Vegas residency show, Eurovision 2017, I am a Singer 2018, Electronic Music awards, Hunan TV’s New Year Gala 2016/2017,

Typically Lighting directors and creative directors create visuals before the show to give an idea of what they are seeing and as a guide to what they would like the show to look like. Nick is then able to use his talent and creativity to design looks for shows and music numbers using a range of lighting rigs and or video content with the LD or creative director, giving his creative input and guidance to realise his original thoughts and ideas for the show.

Nick continues to enjoy designing and working as LD of Theatre shows and corporate events.
